Ganmain is a small rural community with a population of around 560 people and is situated in the eastern Riverina region of NSW.
The original custodians of the land were Wiradjuri people. The name ‘Ganmain’ itself is an aboriginal word meaning 'man decorated with scars'. European settlers arrived in 1835 and the town was proclaimed a village on November 26, 1892.
Known as the Sheaf Hay Centre of Australia, the region produces some of the finest chaff in the land by using harvesting methods that are centuries old. A rare glimpse of the heritage trades of sheaf hay stooking and stack building can still be seen in the district. A visit to the Ganmain Historical Society Museum and the Hay Display Centre will provide you with further insight into our farming heritage and other enlightenments to our history.
Ganmain’s historic railway dams provide the ideal backdrop for the Murumbang Nature Walk with bird-watching observatories, picnic area and Interpretive Centre. Relax in the peace and quiet of the Walk and perhaps join in the many bird-watchers who seek out the 200+ species of birds that can be found in this region.
A healthy and active community, Ganmain offers golf, bowls, tennis, fishing, football, netball, swimming and more. Ganmain’s licenced clubs and hotel present plenty of social happenings as do our many community groups, churches, schools, sports and cultural organisations.
Ganmain’s largest annual event is its Agricultural Show held during August of each year. Visitors from near and far experience the fun and ‘bush’ atmosphere of this enjoyable event. And, of course Ganmain is also the home of the famous Ganmain Pie.
With ample parking, the beautiful Victory Gardens are a popular rest stop. Visitors have access to modern BBQ facilities, playground equipment, picnic area and rest rooms. The Craft Cottage, Huff ‘n’ Puff Straw Bale Constructions, affordable accommodation and tempting eateries ensure an interesting and enjoyable stay when you visit Ganmain.
It’s the simple things like finding a car park with ease, clean air and smiling faces that provide the icing on the cake to this authentic, unpretentious rural experience.
